Are you smarter than a 5th grader?

May 12, 2018

Crayons to Computers’ 4th Annual "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader: A Game Changer for Kids" netted more than $68,000. Are You Smarter helps to level the playing field in the classroom by providing students in need the tools to succeed in school and to ensure that the Crayons’ Free Store and Mobile Outreach Program shelves will be stocked for the 2018-19 school year. About 230 guests enjoyed the reception and dinner at the Crayons to Computers Free Store and warehouse.

Thank you to emcee Ryan Houston (reporter from WCPO 9 On Your Side and anchor of The Now Cincinnati), special guest Vinny Rey (linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals) keynote speaker, Mary Anne Hazlett (retired principal from Riverview Elementary). And, a big thank you to the generous sponsors who made this event possible: Riverpoint Capital Management/Mariner Wealth Advisors, First Financial Bank, Frost Brown Todd LLC, Messer, Fifth Third Bank, Mercy Health, Mitsubishi Electric, Prestige AV & Creative Services, Triversity Construction, Universal Contracting Corporation, Valley Interior Systems, WCM Investment Management, Waste Resource Management, BKD CPAs & Advisors, HBK Wealth Management, Madison Wealth Management, Nottinghill Investment Advisers, A Friend of Crayons, Jennifer & Eric Dauer, Joe & Barb Rohs, Michele & Fred Brink, Ellen & Stewart Dunsker, TJ Dyer and Diane & Carl Iseman.

The big winners of the evening were 10 5thGraders, who as a team answered every question correctly and beat event-goers in the tie-breaker, leaving many to ask themselves, "Am I really smarter than a 5th grader?"

The third annual “Are You Smarter than a Fifth-Grader: A Game Changer for Kids” raised thousands of dollars to help ensure Crayons to Computers’ Free Store and Mobile Outreach Program shelves will be stocked for the 2017-18 school year.

Emcees were Randi Rico and Kyla Woods, and the keynote speaker was Dave Smith, executive director of the Kids in Need Foundation.

Winner for the third year in a row was Messer Construction. Not to be outplayed, the students answered every question right throughout the game, leading many of the adult guests to ask themselves, “Am I really smarter than a fifth-grader?”

The organization’s newest video, “Breaking the Cycle of Poverty,” was unveiled during the event.

Wart's "My Wish" Birthday Party

August 13, 2017

Trader Joe's mascot, Wart, had a Birthday Party, and he invited all of his friends, including our Big Red Crayon. Wart believes that it is better to give than to receive and so in lieu of presents, he wanted all that attended to fill out #MyWishForYou cards of encouragement. Hundreds of cards were collected and have already been put in many of the 37,000 backpacks that we will distribute this fall through our Teacher Free Store and Mobile Outreach Program.

The family friendly event included magnet pictures with local mascots, arm tattoos by local artists from the Kennedy Heights Arts Center, a craft project, music by the Walnut Hills High School Jazz Combo and a giant cupcake cake.

These are just some of the many great moments from the event.
